Low Testosterone Treatment in Winston-Salem, North Carolina

What Is Low Testosterone?

When boys enter into puberty during their teen years, the male hormone produced in the testicles helps them develop male features such as facial and body hair, a more resonant voice, and muscle strength.

Testosterone is critically essential to normal male sexual development and functions. As men age, their testosterone levels begin to decrease gradually.

Most men beyond the age of 35 have testosterone levels dropping, and almost all men beyond the age of 50 will be deficient. When testosterone levels have fallen, and symptoms start to develop, this is known as Testosterone Deficiency Syndrome (TD) or Low Testosterone (Low-T).

Signs You May Have Low Testosterone Levels

Because Testosterone is such an essential hormone in men’s bodies, low testosterone levels can have severe effects on all aspects of the body, including physically and mentally. This can lead to:

  • Reduced sex drive and erectile function
  • Loss of body hair or reduced beard growth
  • Loss of lean muscle mass and increased body fat
  • Bone fragility
  • Swelling/tenderness in breast tissue
  • Serious chronic fatigue
  • Hot flashes
  • Effects on cholesterol metabolism
  • Obesity
  • Depression

You must seek a medical professional’s attention and be treated if you have been experiencing some or all of the signs of low testosterone levels.

Treating Low Testosterone Levels

Diagnosis:

Identifying men and women with low Testosterone is essential because until it is treated, symptoms will persist. The providers at Robinhood Integrative Health will ask about specific symptoms you are experiencing and confirm with lab results.

We will often check more labs than just Testosterone, including Estrogen, FSH/LH, Prolactin, CBC, PSA, and SHBG (sex-hormone binding globulin).

Normal vs. Optimal:

Another thing that we do differently is interpret the lab results through an Integrative or Functional medicine lens. There is a big difference between lab results being “normal” and “optimal.”

For example, a “normal range” of Testosterone in men is 250-1000. People will feel much different with a Testosterone level of 300 compared to a testosterone level of 900. Unfortunately, this is a type of Low-T that is often missed.

Treatment:

We also have different tools available for treatment. We believe that there is no “one size fits all” approach, and the treatment should be tailored to the individual.

We will use Clomid or HCG medications if we believe there is still natural testosterone production available or if there is a concern of infertility or testicular volume. We will also use testosterone creams, injections, or pellets, depending on the patient’s desires and individual responses.
